Dining Options in Athens:

In addition to multiple chain restaurants like Applebee’s, The Cotton Patch, Subway, Schlotzsky’s, McAlister’s Deli and other fast food options, there are numerous local flare restaurants to consider:

Railway Café has one of the better chefs in Athens.  It is only open on the weekdays and only for lunch.  It has a really good selection of freshly prepared specials and wonderful service.

Mexican Food Options includes Ochoa’s, Jalapeno Tree, El San Luis (Mexican seafood), Jalisco Taqueria and others.

Home Style Cooking Options – In addition to Applebee’s and The Cotton Patch, there is Tilo’s Cuisine and Athens Café.

Pizza options include Rounders Pizza on 226 S Palestine at (903) 675-9000, Domino’s Pizza on 210 Crestway St at (903) 670-3160, Ken’s Pizza Palor on 505 S Palestine St at (903) 675-8507, Pizza Hut on 1409 E Tyler St. at (903) 675-6060 and Little Caesars Pizza on 607 E Tyler at (903) 675-2335.

Other – Hunan’s Buffet has a wide selection of Chinese food, including sushi rolls.  Catfish Palace and Old West Bean and Burger are couple of other unique options to consider.

Shopping & Other Ideas:  

Needle Niche – Do you need some sewing supplies or material?  This is the local place to go!

Come And Take It – If you need some wine, special baked goods, cheeses or sandwiches, try this store near downtown Athens.

Pandora’s Box – It’s located about 30 minutes away in Frankston.

The Retreat Day Spa – Need some relaxing time after all the quilting?  Try this Athens spa out!

Local Attractions:

Canton’s First Monday Trade Days – About 35 minutes north from The Retreat is one of the nation’s largest Trade Show.  It’s held Thursday through Sunday before the first Monday of each month.

Local vineyards and wineries – Check the Internet for the latest locations.

The Texas State Railroad – This 25-mile railroad line from Palestine to Rush on a 1917 locomotive is a wonderful way to experience a form of transportation of the by-gone years as well as to see the piney woods of east Texas.  Palestine is about a 45-minute drive south of The Retreat.

Cherokee Trace Drive Thru Safari – A bit over an hour drive from The Retreat, but well worth it, is this 300-acre wildlife park outside of Jacksonville.

East Texas Arboretum – Less than a 10-minute drive, is some beautiful flower gardens and the historical Wofford house.

Lakes, lakes and more lakes – Cedar Creek Reservoir, Lake Athens, and Lake Palestine are a few of the lakes that are within a relatively short drive from The Retreat.

Directions:

The Retreat at the End of the Road address is 9100 County Road 2800, Athens, TX, 75751.  The property is at the end of County Road 2800 on the west side.  Most GPS services will get you close.  If the driving instructions tell you that you have reached your destination and you haven’t come to our gate, keep driving west on County Road 2800 until you see The Retreat sign at the end of the road.  The GPS coordinates are 32o 12’ 54” N and 95o 55’ 56” W.

Directions from Dallas:

Take highway 175 east out of Dallas.  As you get close to Athens, you will see Loop 7 that goes around the town.  Take a right on the loop (south) and go 1.7 miles.  Take a right on that small country road (County Road 1409).  After a 1/10 of a mile, you will come to a T-intersection stop.  Take a right on it (County Road 1408).
Continue on CR 1408 for about 7/10’s of a mile until you come to a T-intersection stop.  Take a left there (County Road 2800, or Pleasant Ridge Road).  Stay on that road for 1.4 miles until that road ends at our gate (Carlson).  You will see the sign for The Retreat at the End of the Road.  You will be provided a 4-digit gate security code that will work for the duration of your stay.  Follow the iron-ore road until you come to a split in the road with a big rooster there and go left.  About 4/10’s of a mile down the road you will come to the two-story, modern-style facility of The Retreat.

Directions from Houston:

Take I-45 North to Corsicana.  Exit Hwy.31 East.  Turn right and head toward Athens. You’ll pass through the towns of Powell, Kerens, Trinidad and Malakoff.  Continue on Hwy. 31 through the community of Crescent Heights.  As you approach Athens, turn left onto Loop 7. Immediately get into the left-hand turn lane and take the first left onto County Road 1408.
Continue on CR 1408 for about 7/10’s of a mile until the road dead-ends into a “T”.  Turn left and follow the road for approximately 1.4 miles until that road ends at our gate (Carlson).  You will see the sign for The Retreat at the End of the Road.  You will be provided a 4-digit gate security code that will work for the duration of your stay.  Follow the iron-ore road until you come to a split in the road with a big rooster there and go left.  About 4/10’s of a mile down the road you will come to the two-story, modern-style facility of The Retreat.

Directions from Tyler:

Take Hwy. 31 West to Athens.  As you approach Athens, you will see an overpass crossing over Hwy. 31. This is Loop 7/FM317).  Exit right onto Loop 7 heading north.  Continue on Loop for approximately 5.3 miles
When you pass a big Baptist church on the right, take the very first right after passing this sign. This is an unmarked road (CR 1409).  On that road, at 1/10 of a mile, you will come to a T-intersection stop.  Take a right on it.  About 7/10’s of a mile down that road, you will come to another T-intersection stop.  Take a left at that one.  Stay on that road for 1.4 miles until that road ends at our gate (Carlson).  You will see the sign for The Retreat at the End of the Road.  You will be provided a 4-digit gate security code that will work for the duration of your stay.  Follow the iron-ore road until you come to a split in the road with a big rooster there and go left.  About 4/10’s of a mile down the road you will come to the two-story, modern-style facility of The Retreat.

Directions from San Antonio-Austin:

Take I-35 N to Waco.  Take exit 338A toward Bellmead /TX-31 / Waco Drive / US-84.  Follow the signs to TX-31 E (TX-31/Hubbard/Corsicana).  Take TX-31 to Corsicana.  Continue heading east toward Athens. You’ll pass through the towns of Powell, Kerens, Trinidad and Malakoff.
